Starry Starry Night...

TMS Recital 2009

Judging by the solo recitals last weekend, Tanglewood Music School has a constellation of bright young musicians. Like a proud mother, Principal Karen Yap was all smiles as 17 of TMS’ talented students took to the stage to play individually for family and friends.

Bear in mind, that unlike most other nights, the students were up on stage doing solos – no orchestra to back you up, no hopes of covering up your mistakes. So even if they were performing for familiar faces (of family, teachers, supporters and friends), there was no less pressure as all eyes and ears would be on each and every student, their every movement and note played.

But coupled with hours of practise, the confidence each student showed on stage outshone the lights at the YMS auditorium. From their faces, you could see a calm confidence, mostly a sense of satisfaction, and enjoyment from the time their piano, cello or violin sung out to the 100-odd audience occupying the ground level at YMS.

On that Saturday evening, it felt more like ‘family’. The audience showed love and appreciation, as each student were presented with flowers and gifts after their solos; lots of hugs to go around too! One can imagine how the parents in the audience would feel to see how much each student has grown, from playing his or her first note to a full solo recital on stage.

There was more love and congratulations outside the hall, as the parents came prepared with food and drinks for the evening’s potluck. Pizza, homemade Vietnamese spring rolls, pastries and fresh fruits were part of the parents’ labour of love.

And no wonder Principal Karen was happy – it was one big family having an enjoyable evening of music and laughter.
